Institutional Social Responsibility

SCIT’s vision in social responsibility is “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. The aligned mission is to learn social responsibility lessons ‘by doing’ extension activities and ‘by reflecting’. This social sensitization and learning are achieved through following types of activities:

Rural Survey, working with underprivileged, education, Awareness Campaigns, eco-friendliness, Community Development Summits, Health care and social street plays. SCIT collaborates with NGOs for these activities.

Rural Survey

SCIT ISR Committee students collaborated with IIT Bombay’s Million SoUL project. The mission is ‘Right to Light’, implemented by preparing and distributing solar lamps for impoverished rural students (5th standard to 12th standard). SCIT ISR students volunteered, trained for, and conducted a needs based analysis and concurrent evaluation study of these solar lamps in Palghar district in Maharashtra. Their sincerity and work delivered was appreciated at IIT Bombay. This provided eye opening learning experiences on impoverished rural life difficulties.

Working with Underprivileged

SCIT students conducted various activities for children of an Orphanage in collaboration with ‘Pradnya’, an NGO initiated by Pradeep Kumar, an alumnus of SCIT. Their contribution to critical needs of orphanage campus was much appreciated. Students visit old age homes, home for special adults, HIV +ve children to cheer them up with interesting activities. This helps to instil nurturing attitudes towards society in a compassionate way. A rapid fund raising campaign was conducted to save a child, in critical condition. Hospital bills were paid in time on behalf of the underprivileged parents, the child was saved by medical team at Aditya Birla Hospital.

Education

A tuition centre is organized and run by SCIT students to tutor children of staff on campus. This supplemental learning helps children to overcome lacuna in their education. The age group of attending children is 5 to 15 years.

Social awareness Campaigns

SCIT students conducted awareness campaigns in the following approaches: ‘save the girl child’ by a peace march, candle protest march against ‘violence against women’ in view of rape victims, ‘petition against animal cruelty’ campaign, ‘no food wastage’ posters campaign and practicing in campus dining hall. Such awareness campaigns helps to raise awareness and voice against social evils.

Eco-friendliness

SCIT students learned the best way to remedy urban environment is to plant tree saplings. Their regular activity was supplemented this year with seedlings planted on campus. The recent batch has initiated ‘plant a tree on campus’ to initiate the greening of campus efforts. An e-waste awareness poster campaign, student research on e-waste management adds value to their learning. SCIT ISR students create ‘Green Ganesha for on campus festivals, eco-friendly biodegradable Ganesh images and idols, to spread awareness on water and soil pollution in current festival. They trained with an NGO to create Ganesha with white clay.

Community Development Summits

SCIT ISR Committee students organize annual summits on Community Development. Various NGOs present their work and initiate collaborating opportunities, participate in panel discussions, and debate on current social organizations challenges and solutions. These summits are eye openers for every new batch of SCIT students and inspire extensions into social responsibility activity.

Health care

SCIT ISR Committee students have initiated from year 2015 onwards, one more branch of social responsibility activities in healthcare area. First sensitization on health issues were imbibed by visiting CIPLA Palliative care, a hospice for terminally ill patients of cancer.

‘Eklavya’ street plays

An important initiative by SCIT students is ‘Eklavya’, a street playteam. Students develop and conduct street plays to spread awareness on social issues and messages of social responsibility. Awards in competitions at educational institutions were the acknowledgements for the team. scit.edu
